Sad day when they are leaving rather than coming...

As you enter NYC Harbor you will see the Statue of Liberty and on it you will read the words: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe freedom"

A clear symbol of what freedoms and liberties were meant over 200 years ago when our founders signed the Declaration of Independence.

Poker was invented in 1864 in a 52-card deck in the version of 7-card stud on the riverboats of the Mississippi river.

The first fully functional digital computer ENIAC was completed in 1946 at the University of Pennsylvania.

The first internet was up and running in America ARPANET at Stanford Research Institute in 1969.

The first "real money" online poker site was running on Jan 1, 1998 Planet Poker founded by Mike Caro.

The UIGEA/ Unlawful internet gaming Act was passed on Sept 30, 2006 making it illegal for banks in the US to process gaming online transactions thus making it virtually impossible for Americans to play online even though poker itself is and was not illegal.

"Black Friday" April 15, 2011 the United States Dept of Justice seizes the Domains and shuts down and indicts most of the major online poker sites that served US customers in the years after the UIGEA was passed.

This great nation that I love invented this game I love. We marketed it and popularized it and then big corporate America, who is behind the passing of the UIGEA and the DOJ indictments, has now made it where we (America, the "Land of the free" ???) are one of only a few nations that now fully has made it where its citizens cannot play online poker !

Yes that is right, countries like China, Iran, former Soviet Union all allow their people to fully play online with no Govt involvement at all !

Because of this I now know many people whom I met through the poker world have immigrated to other countries such as Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica etc etc where they can be free to play the game they love because they cannot do so in the United States of America !!

Once again I quote: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe freedom"..

What have we done to ourselves ? And what can we do to fix it ? Some groups like the PPA are fighting for Federal Legislation that regulates online poker and will set up licensing fees and tax it. This may seem like a good idea and it certainly might be better than conditions pre "Black Friday" as online poker operated with minimum accountability. But if we allow big business such as Harrahs Corporation and people like Senator Harry Reid of Nevada to get their way we will have a much worse scenario that would give us few sites to play on all owned by a few people which would be really bad for the players.

Even if you do not play poker, PLEASE understand this fight is not just about poker, it is about what it is to be an American ! People are now leaving the US and going to other countries where they are finding the kind of freedoms we once delivered ! That alone should scare any red blooded American.

The work force

It has been almost 4 years since I have had any kind of job at all in the work force, and almost 10 years since I have worked steadily for a company.

Poker has certainly taken up a lot of good years of my work life. But I have no regrets as I got to do something I loved. Although there were many ups & downs in my poker career I cannot allow myself to believe that I made the wrong choices with regards to what I chose to do for a living.

One of my favorite lines in Rounders is when Mike McD asked his professor if he "had it to do all over again would he make the same choices?" He simply replied; "what choice" ...

Many times in life we go down certain paths and they may lead to places we did not intend to go to. However, if life truly is a journey then we cannot spend too much time in thoughts about past choices and what others may or may not think of us. I believe as Doctor Steven Covey says: "success is success with self". Ultimately we must answer to ourselves.

With that in mind I have decided that I will no longer play poker fulltime for my profession. I am going to re-enter the work force. I believe that I have much to contribute in terms of what I can accomplish in many areas of the work place.

I am intrigued by technology and specifically electronics. So for now I am going to look for trade schools to get started in the trades and then look to further my education and hopefully become an engineer. I know what I can do when I work hard and I look forward to all the challenges I will face which are many.

I will always play the game I love at the highest level I am capable and never cease to improve and learn/grow, it will now just be more part time and treated as such in terms of how much time and resources I will spend on the game. I plan to always participate in live series tournaments including a yearly sabbatical at the WSOP in Las Vegas:-)

I will continue to blog about my poker experiences, but I will also transform and add to this blog my new passion to return to work and the pursuit of my goals in the work place.

I wish everyone a great week on & off the felt and may God bless and protect us all in our everyday lives.

tough ending to WSOP

I missed out on 7 or 8 of my last tournaments at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas including the $10k Main Event due to some nagging Health issues. I had ran out of my Diabetic medication and along with my diet for 3 weeks in Vegas and a little too much beer I got really sick and according to my Doctor was in serious danger zone for a diabetic coma, kidney shutting down and some other very serious possibilities.

I spent the last 4 days before I left in bed. I tried to get my doctor to forward a prescription to Vegas but he refused and told me to report to him or go to the hospital. Since I have no current health insurance(one of the very serious drawbacks to playing poker for a living) my Mom and I decided it best for me to come home and see my family Doctor.

I had hoped to return for the Main Event but my health is more important so I decided to stay home and get myself straightened out and prepare for next year.

I want to thank Max Katz and Brad McFarland for investing in me this year and I apologize for not being able to follow through.

I may not blog for a while as there is no online poker for now obviously and my live game is going to be put on hold for a while while I focus on my health and getting myself back into really good shape in order to become even a better player longterm.

I may also have to find a regular job and rebuild financially as well as taking care of some debts. I view all this as a challenge and I am not afraid of some good old fashion hard work.

Have a great summer everyone and I will check in and blog something from time to time with some updates....

World series of poker

I have been in Vegas for 15 days. I am one small cash for 15 tournaments. I am playing well and I still have 10-12 more events including the Main Event so I am feeling good.

Vegas can pray on peoples weaknesses in terms of nightlife and of course gambling. I am and have been committed to being disciplined in my diet, taking daily walks and saying no to too much nightlife.

In 15 days I have went out late one night so I feel good about that. I'm going to keep on playing my best and focusing and I believe good things will happen.

I wish everyone a great week on & off the felt :-)

Vegas / conditioning

Heading to Vegas for WSOP 2011 in 2 weeeks :-) One thing that I have been doing is walking, eating right and working out and I will continue to do so throughout the summer and get myself back into shape.

The famous Jack Lalane pictured here inspires me too. He lived to be 97 and almost to his death was in great shape !

I believe that being physically fit will help me mentally at the tables as well... Have a great day ev1 and remember it is never too late to be in great shape !

FoxWoods Trip

General trip report:

I traveled via Bus from Akron, OH directly to FoxWoods Casino. Total Bus fare there and back was $220 plus 6 different cab fares to FoxWoods and back to the Days Inn in Mystic, CT costs about $150... including food, drinks, tips, hotel etc... my total expenses apart from buy-ins was approximately $600 for 4 days.

I was 0 for 3. I played the $600 $125k GTD, the $120 $10k GTD and the $300 $100k GTD..

I went deep playing almost 12 hours Saturday in the $600 falling short about 20 off the money bubble. My cripple hand was almost scripted, here is the hand history:

8 handed table, blinds 1500/3k 500 ante; 2 limpers and I over call $3k on the button with 8d-9d from a $87k stack. SB call and then the BB tank squeezes to $13k total. both limpers fold and the action is to me.

I literally tank for 1-2 mins trying to asses the situation. I know he has literal blade, so as long as I am getting the proper implied odds post flop I can profitably call and intending to get stacks in on favorable flops vs his range which consists of AK and QQ+

I glance from the corner of my eye attempting to make sure he has us covered and I cannot tell. In hindsight I should have asked for a count, because if I had I would not have called. He only had $62k behind which means even if we flop big he does not have enough chips to make our call profitable.

Incorrectly I call and the flop is just the 5d-7d-9c... He just leads for $50k (LOLz he obv has QQ+) and I obviously can never fold now. When I table my hand he insta stands up and walks away from the table after flipp his Kh-Ks lolz.... The board so eloquently bricks out Jc-2c and I so neatly am left crippled. 2 orbits later I reship AJdd and just run directly into KK again :( sigh

The other 2 events I never chipped up and busted fairly early with no key hands other than I got hero called @ 100/200 when I 3 barreled a flopped flush draw by a Euro crab drinking Johnny Walker shots with King hi how good are they lmao...

I would like to thank all the people who invested including Brad(my backer) who covered the expenses for me. It is Vegas in 3 weeks, see you there :-)

Have a great day on & off the felt ev1 ...

Post Black Friday

I started playing last week on BlackChipPoker (Merge Network). I found a backer through 2+2, a nice gentleman from Canada who worked out a good MTT/S&G deal.

My first day I got 2nd in a $5r MTT for almost $1k.. It is a nice start and definitely nice to be back.

I will be in FoxWoods next week 5/13 - 5/17 for the MegaStack Series and then it's Vegas for the WSOP 2011 :-)

Have a great day and for you Americans looking for a place to play give Merge a try...

Home of the brave, land of the free

Last Friday the Department of Justice closed down 3 major online poker sites that serve Americans.

At this very moment countries such as China and Russia allow their citizens to play online poker yet America does not !

We are supposed to set the example in the world for freedom of liberties, some example gentlemen.

As Doc Holliday was once quoted: "the hypocrisy knows no boundaries"......... I think it is time we American poker players have a real voice and stand up for what we believe should be a right and a liberty as an American.

As for me, my life will take a downswing for the moment in terms of poker. I do not have the funds to play live, it is becoming even less likely that I will be competing in this years WSOP in Vegas even though I sold 75% for over $18k I am currently unable to cover the remaining $5k in shares. If I do not find a backer by the end of May it will be as scotty nguyen would say: " gonna all over baby" for me.

Well, if there is one thing I will credit years of grinding and learning the game is that just like in poker, in life things dont always work out as planned..

I will move on and learn from it and be better prepared next time...

I will try to blog randomly but now that I am not playing the game I love the subject & lessons I share will be further in between...

Have a great day and week and I wish you all success on & off the felt.

who is any good in poker ?

Bushidō (武士道?), meaning "Way of the Warrior", is a Japanese code of conduct and a way of the samurai life.

I have come to discover among my poker friends a sort of pattern, where no one thinks anyone else is really any good.

Who is good in poker ? Well this brings me to an interesting discovery.

The other night I was deep in a Tournament and I made a play that someone who was watching thought was terrible. In so seeing this, a lot of people will make assumptions based on one play that sums up your entire game.

This is presumptuous and wrong and i have done it as well when watching others. My play while in a vacuum may not be textbook, but with the different aspects of poker such as ebb and flow of the game, table dynamics and player tendencies etc my play felt perfectly fine to me and actually worked.

Does that make it right or wrong ? Does that make me good or bad ? Who is to say and why ?

The answer ? I cannot say. But what I can say is that there are other things that go into making a good player than just isolated hands played.

For Samurai in Ancient Japan, they lived by what was called the Bushido. It was code of conduct. Set rules by which to act and live by that allowed them to live lives of honor and victory.

In poker, as well as life there a few things that if done consistently just like the Bushido will lead to success and prosperity and victory.

Simply working harder than most. Studying and putting in the effort and time it takes to become the best you can be. When we make mistakes we try to learn from them and move on. Stay "hungry" with a fierce desire to compete and never giving up. Stay humble and always remind ourselves that people who seem more "due" than we think they should be is not something we need to focus on.

If we can focus on these areas I promise success will follow. You see, the person that never ceases to believe in themselves and never quits is the one who is truly good despite a few bad plays they may make in others eyes.

Keep working hard and gl on & off the felt and have a great week :-)

Ego

Ego is a Latin word meaning "I", cognate with the Greek "Εγώ (Ego)" meaning "I".

Sometimes our "Ego" causes us to make less than +EV decisions at the poker tables. We may over estimate our edge that we believe we have on our opponents, we may make plays that have no sound strategy to them other than bravado or tilt/frustration toward an opponent we think is a bad player. We may do many things that are not fundamentally sound and not even be aware because of "Ego".

I have been working on this area of my game lately as well as many areas but this one is close to my heart. How do we balance confidence and belief in ourselves with that ever present and lurking "Ego" that can turn confidence into arrogance ?

Well for me it is the same as anything else in my life that I wish to improve. First I pray on it and ask God to help me and give me wisdom and strength to overcome it. Next I do what I believe is our calling in life, I go to work on it. And I will keep working on this area until I have victory.

This past Sunday I was blessed to final table and finish 3rd for $8300 in the mass field $26 $58k GTD on Full Tilt. When we were 3 handed me and another opponent wanted to look at chop numbers that would have insured all of us at least $13k but one opponent did not want to chop. the stacks were shallow and I felt it was best to chop but he did not.

I remember getting very very frustrated in that I thought his "Ego" got in the way of a smart decision. And even though I still believe that chopping was optimal perhaps it was my own "Ego" that was bruised ?

Just because someone does not do what I believe is right does not make it wrong. Perhaps it is not that he thought he had a great skill edge but perhaps he may have had different reasons for his decision. A bit later he went on to beat my 99< to his ATos all in preflop and shipped 1st for $18k. In my opinion his less than optimal decision turned into profit for him and I bid him congrats.

This happens a lot in poker. Bad/poor/less than optimal play and decision making can lead to more profits in the short term. It can skew our thinking and perception of what is right and wrong. In the long term of a lifetime of playing the players who make more optimal decisions than their opponents will have a better chance to succeed.

My goal is to become the best player I can and removing "Ego" from my decision making process is going to help me greatly. I felt like this player made a poor choice and was rewarded + $10k more for doing so. As well as making better decisions and removing "ego" is accepting that things are not always perfectly fair in life or poker.

I wish you all the best in your own personal struggles on and off the felt and have a great week :-)

Sharpen The Saw

In the book "7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE" by Dr. Stephen Covey, habit number seven is: :sharpen the saw".

It basically states that in order to be successful and highly effective we need to set some time aside for rest, relaxation, personal time to recover etc...

The way we each do it can be different for everyone but for me I am taking a few days off from Poker to get some chores done I've been putting off, gonna take a walk and hit some golf balls, watch some movies etc...

Remember to sharpen your saw and have a great week everyone :-)

Goosfraba

Goosfraba is word that Inuit use to calm down their children.

It was used in the very funny comedy with Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson.

Recently I have struggled at the tables with my emotions and especially with anger. Ive been running what I consider poorly on Full Tilt.

Today I was reminded in a funny way by a friend to "goosfraba" after yelling in his ear... lol After a little giggle I relaxed and went on later to win the late $26 KO 6 max MTT for $4.1k

For those of us wired like myself, we will always battle daily with our emotions. But I can promise you that they do not have to define or control us. Dont get frustrated or give up, just keep working hard everyday and you can have victory over them...

Have a great day/week everyone :-)

"you cannot give more than 100%" John Wooden

The Latin phrase nemo dat quod non habet means: "No one gives what he does not have".
It really is that simple. We cannot give more than we have to give. Just as in real life there are no real "over achievers" because we can only do what we are able to do and no more.

In my life and certainly in my poker life I have never given near 100%. But from this day I commit myself to trying harder and working harder than I ever have before.

So whatever you goals and dreams are I wish you the best in giving your all toward achievement giving all that you have to offer.

Trip Report

I got back from my trip to PA few days ago. It was nice to get out for a week and hang out with Brad, do some sweat/coaching sessions and relax a bit etc...

I got to drive by the steps where Rocky ran and even played some live cash games sessions at the Sands where I made a small profit :-)

I'd also like to shout out to one of my friends I met through Brad who needs our prayers right now, God Bless you Elk...

I even shipped the $5 2R1A for $6.2k when I got home... Have a great week everyone..

The Main thing

For me, the main thing is my Faith and service to my Lord and Savior.

Everything else in my life is directly related to that. My family, my goals, dreams, poker etc all revolves around my faith.

So whatever the main thing is in your life, never lose site of what that is.

Today I leave for a road trip to eastern Pa to my coach/backer's house for some poker training, maybe some live play and generally to get out for a week or so. It should be a lot of fun as well as very productive.

I may not be entering my daily results everyday as I will be spending much time in study and playing during this time. I will however post some updates.

Have a great day and week and God Bless you all.

Success

My friend and coach/backer reminded me the other day of this great and true quote:

"The dictionary is the only place where you find success before work" Vince Lombardi

I have recommitted myself to breaking down my game and building it back up. One of the tools I will use to do this will be posting my daily results on this blog along with key hand histories in Tournaments to be examined and evaluated. Please weigh in anytime you wish...

Thanks again Brad and Coach Lombardi for reminding me that most successful get to where they are for many different reasons but the most common reason is that they simply work harder than everyone else.

Thought for the day

From 1999 - 2001 I had a great experience working as an assistant coach and scout at Triway H.S. for future Hall of Fame basketball Coach Randy Montgomery.

Here is a great News Article about Coach:

(copy/paste link:)
http://northcanton.patch.com/articles/hoover-high-coach-reaches-500-win-milestone-in-107-56-romp-over-fitch

Coach always had himself, another coach or a player bring to practice with them a "Thought for the day". It would be a quote or verse or an idea and before practice the team would discuss it and learn from it.

It was one of many things I learned from Coach Montgomery that I use in my daily work habits and now that I am playing MTT's full time I will be blogging daily with my results as well as my "thought for a day"...

thanks a lot Coach and gl the rest of the season.

How we feel

"Today I will be Master of my emotions"
Og Mandino

If I feel depressed I will sing
If I feel sad I will laugh
If I feel ill I will double my labor
If I feel fear I will plunge ahead...

Sometimes I am my own worst enemy in that I seem to always attach an emotion with a result. This can be a bad thing in life but in poker it is disaster.

Every day I must remind myself over and over again that no matter how I feel at that particular time due to whatever circumstance or result that I must NOT allow these emotions and feelings to change or affect my decision making.

I wish everyone a great week on & off the felt and may you too learn to be Master of your own emotions...

Roller Coaster

Poker is similar to life as it can be quite a roller coaster ride at times. The ups & downs both monetarily and emotionally can become difficult to deal with especially if we are not prepared for it.

The best advice I can give is to learn as much as you can about the particular game you play, not only strategy but what is the standard variance in terms of normal downswings and then just prepare yourself because it will come.

And lastly, just like a roller coaster... Enjoy the ride :-)
